Golden Safety Rules
We have developed ten everyday actions that can help cut the risk of serious injury or death at sea. Chosen from real incident reports, they support (not replace) your company procedures and apply to everyone on board. Before any job, take a moment to think, look for hazards, assess the risks, make sure you know how to stop the work and what to do in an emergency, and keep checking for changes as you go.
Ten Golden Safety Rules for zero accidents
Stop
Ensure all colleagues are empowered to STOP WORK and intervene.
Enclosed Space Entry
Only enter enclosed spaces once ventilated, tested safe, and with a rescue plan.
Fall Prevention
Plan the task and protect yourself when working at height or during transfers.
Energy Isolation
Before working with stored or invisible hazards (e.g., electrical, pressure), de-energise, lock out, and test.
Working Over Water/Access to Vessels
Wear a flotation device and assess sea and transfer conditions.
Line of Fire
Stay away from suspended loads, stored pressure, moving machinery and snap-back areas.
Navigation
Follow collision regulations, supplement navigation aids with visual and manual ones, manage fatigue.
Lifeboats
Use trained crew, clear roles, and proper supervision during maintenance and tests.
Hotwork
Clear flammables, test for gases, and use a permit.
Distractions
Ensure there’s no distraction during safety-critical work.
